The J.M. Smucker Company Asks Families to Share Recipes and Traditions for a Chance to Make New Memories

One grand prize winner will win a family trip for eight to Walt Disney World® Resort

ORRVILLE, OH (August 26, 2009) – For more than 100 years, The J.M. Smucker Company has helped create mealtime memories and traditions for families nationwide with Smucker’s® jams, jellies and preserves. This summer, families across the country are invited to enter the second annual “Spreading Smucker’s Traditions Recipe and Essay” contest and share their family recipes and memories for a chance to win a five day, four night family trip for eight to the Walt Disney World® Resort.

To enter, consumers are asked to share an original family recipe that incorporates at least ΒΌ cup of Smucker’s jams, jellies, preserves or fruit butter and the story behind how their recipe makes family celebrations special. The recipe must have been passed down for at least two generations and needs to include names of all family members involved in the sharing of the recipe. Entries will be accepted between August 26 and October 12, 2009. Recipes will be selected and scored on taste, creativity, ease of preparation, appearance and nutritional balance, while the essays will be scored on relevance to theme, creative expression and clarity. The top five finalists will be posted to www.smuckers.com on or about November 5, 2009 for a national online vote. Visitors to the site, 18 or older, will be given the chance to vote for the best recipe to help determine one grand prize winner, which will be announced in December 2009.

There are a variety of unique and delicious ways to incorporate Smucker’s jams, jellies and preserves into any meal occasion. Start a meal with a simple spinach salad brightened up with a quick, sweet vinaigrette made with Smucker’s Seedless Red Raspberry Jam. Mix Smucker’s Strawberry Preserves with lemon juice and mustard to create a deliciously sweet glaze to top a savory smoked ham main course. Finish a family meal by giving classic cheesecake bars a berry twist with Smucker’s Seedless Blackberry Jam. These delicious recipes and more are available at www.smuckers.com.

“We are thrilled to be a part of so many beloved family recipes and gatherings that leave a lasting impression on multiple generations,” said Maribeth Badertscher, Director, Corporate Communications, The J.M. Smucker Company. “Through the contest, we hope to encourage and inspire family meals, traditions and new memories for generations to come.”

Last year’s winning recipe, “Nana’s Apple Butter Cake,” came from Karen M. of Las Vegas, Nevada. The recipe, which features Smucker’s Apple Butter, has been passed down in her family for three generations starting with her grandmother and is now being passed on to her son.

“My family and I were thrilled to share with America a recipe that has meant so much to us for so long,” said Karen. “My Nana’s cooking really brought the entire family together, and we continue to honor her by baking this dish each year. Our trip to Walt Disney World was a wonderful opportunity to create new, beautiful memories with the entire family.”

The grand prize package for eight includes airfare, transportation between the Orlando International airport and the Walt Disney World® Resort, hotel accommodations for four nights, five-day Magic Your Way® Tickets with Park Hopper® Option and commemorative Walt Disney World T-shirts and photos. Each of the five contest finalists featured in the online vote will also receive a gift basket of Smucker's brand products.

Nana's Apple Butter Cake

Ingredients:
Cake:
1 box Pillsbury® Moist Supreme yellow cake mix
1 cup water
3 eggs
2 tablespoons Crisco® Pure Vegetable Oil
3/4 cup Smucker's® Apple Butter
2 apples, peeled, cored and sliced into about 16 wedges
1 teaspoon cinnamon combined with 1/4 cup sugar
Streusel Topping:
2/3 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup Hungry Jack® Complete Pancake Mix or an all-purpose baking mix
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup butter, softened
Powdered sugar

Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. Combine cake mix, water, eggs, oil and apple butter. Beat at low speed for 1 minute to blend ingredients and 2 minutes at high speed. Pour mix into greased/floured 9 x 13 pan.

3. Slice apples into a bowl and add cinnamon/sugar mixture, mixing until apples are well coated. Place apple slices (round side out/core side in) in the batter until just the top shows in two rows of eight the length of the pan.

4. Make streusel topping by combining brown sugar, pancake or baking mix, cinnamon and butter. Cut butter into mixture with pastry blender until crumbly.

5. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle streusel topping over cake and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cake cool. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.
