What was the first Smucker's product?
In 1897, Jerome Monroe Smucker opened a small apple cider mill. He pressed apples harvested from his own trees and from neighboring orchards. Word of his cider spread, and Jerome began making apple butter from his grandfather's Pennsylvania Dutch recipe. Jerome's apple butter proved to be even more popular than his cider. In the 1920s, the Smucker's line expanded to preserves, jams, and jellies.
Can I get your recipe for making preserves at home?
No, we don't have recipes downsized for home use. However, check your local library and the Internet for recipes, or call your local county extension agency (part of the state government) to speak to the home economist.
How can I get recipes using your products?
Please visit Smucker's Recipes for great recipes and tips on ways to use our products. Periodically, we feature new recipes and ideas in magazines and newspapers, as well as in-store promotions. You may also call our Consumer Relations Department for more recipes. Phone: 888-550-9555.
Do I have to refrigerate Smucker's peanut butter?
The food items we produce are classified as non-perishable. Refrigeration is not necessary, although it does slow down the oil-separation process.
Should I refrigerate your preserves, jellies, toppings, etc.?
The food items we produce are classified as non-perishable. Refrigeration is not necessary but recommended. Under normal conditions, unopened products should remain safe to eat indefinitely. However, over time the flavor and color of products will decline. Our products have a "best when purchased by" date on the back label.
How long will my opened jar of preserves remain fresh?
Once the product is opened and every time it is used thereafter, it is exposed to mold and yeast spores that exist in the air. While keeping the product refrigerated will discourage spoilage, there is no way to determine the shelf life of an opened product.
How long can I store a jar of your product?
It is the nature of packaged food products to experience some slight color and flavor degradation during extended storage. Products should be stored in cool temperatures (50° F to 60° F is preferable, but it should not exceed 75° F for extended periods) and should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Most of our fruit spreads and ice cream toppings have a shelf life of 24 months from the date of production, and our peanut butters have a shelf life of nine months from the date of production. However, in order to obtain maximum color and flavor of our products, we do recommend consuming them within one year of the purchase date.
If you have more questions regarding date codes or shelf life of our products, please call our Consumer Relations Department. Phone: 888-550-9555
What is the difference between jelly, jam, and preserves?
JELLY is made from fruit juice. Jelly is clear and firm enough to hold its shape when turned out of its container.
JAM is made from a blend of crushed pieces of fruit and fruit puree.
PRESERVES contain whole or large pieces of fruit, making them thicker and more fruit-filled than jams or jellies.
MARMALADE is jelly with shreds of citrus fruit peel.
CONSERVES are jams made from a mixture of citrus fruits and can also include nuts.
FRUIT BUTTERS are made from fruit pulp and sugar cooked together. There is no butter in fruit butter. The term may have developed to describe the appearance of the product or because it is a spread.
CHUTNEY and RELISH are flavorful, seasoned condiments with a consistency similar to jam. Chutney is typically made with fruits and relish is typically made with vegetables.

Where did the slogan, "With a name like Smucker's®, it has to be good®" come from?
The slogan has been used by our company since the mid-1950s. Initially, it referred to the unusual family name (Smucker) with the connotation that since it was such an odd name, the company had better produce outstanding products. As the company's reputation has grown and the name Smucker has become associated with high-quality products, the slogan meaning changed somewhat. According to customers, if you see the Smucker name on a product, you have assurance that the product will be good.
